Let's Talk About Omnitrition's Nite Lite (another in my hCG Diet blog series)
Wednesday, April 17, 2013
I'm finding this blog a bit therapeutic. Honestly, when I started having all these problems with the Omnitrition version of the diet, my support fell away. People doing the diet really want nothing to do with you once the side effects turn serious. With my blog and my page at www.squidoo.com/unsafe_hcg_diet , I know people understand whether they are worried about somebody on the diet or have been through it themselves. So, today, I want to talk about Nite Lite. See, when you do the Omnitrition version of the diet, they have to sell you more products. Really, unless you are a glutton for punishment, very few people make it to two rounds of drops on this diet. Go figure, it turns out it is really hard to lose after a round of this diet because on a 500 calorie diet, your metabolism slows way WAY down. They need another way to make money. Enter all the *nutritional* (take that word with a grain of salt) supplements that are supposed to *enhance* the experience and help you lose more quickly.
One of these products is called Nite Lite. Oh my goodness but what a bi-polar relationship folks had with that product. On the Omni forum, person after person complained about the nasty taste but many would choke it down. I saw people ask whether it was normal to turn red hot with the flush. Others became dizzy. In the month I was there, I saw people posting that they thought they were having an allergic reaction and having trouble breathing (if you have taken Niacin or know somebody who has and they are having trouble breathing, they need to seek prompt medical attention...this can be incredibly serious). If you've read my other blog posts you can guess what happened to most of those posts. Yep, they were deleted too. Usually after a post is deleted, you'll find something like this on the forum:

and here is a transcript of this image:
Original Poster: Please do not post anything negative on here. Your comment could stop a person from using a product that could change their life!!
Poster #2: SECURITY!! Give me a name, oh boy..
Poster #3: agree..Please talk to your distributor privately and then you will know the correct answer and shy :)
Poster #4: Well said
Original Poster: Negative comments and posts will also be deleted while your post is not negative sometimes the comments could lead to it being deleted

Are you getting the idea that this company *may* have something to hide? Quite a few deleted comments seemed to be about Nite Lite.
So, what is Nite Lite. Well, according to all the distributors on this page, this product is supposed to be a miracle concoction that will leave you sleeping like a baby yet wide awake when you need to be. Even during my month of the hCG Diet, I was never even tempted to try this one. I saw enough comments to convince me that something was very wrong with this product.
So, while here on SparkPeople, I stumbled across the nutritional label for Nite Lite (please keep in mind, there is no ingredients list). www.sparkpeople.com/myspark/Calorie_
Finder.asp?FoodID=23337092 Oh my, no wonder I saw so many people complaining about being ill or dizzy or having a reaction after taking it. In light of the recent studies on Niacin, this becomes even more concerning.
Now, there are former distributors who have posted online saying that they found out Omnitrition was not forthcoming with their ingredient list and they left when they found out there were hidden, unsafe ingredients. I have no clue what is hidden in this one but 500% of your daily recommended allowance of Vitamin B (Niacin) is just unsafe and, used regularly can cause very serious side effects.
According to the Mayo Clinic
www.mayoclinic.com/health/niacin-ove
rdose/AN01644
taking too much Niacin over the counter in supplements can be dangerous. Overdose symptoms include:
- Severe Skin Flushing
- Dizziness
- Itching
- Abdominal Pain
- Diarrhea
- Severe liver damage (when used regularly)
So, while many people would assure them the flush was a good thing, turns out, it's not so good. It may be signaling that you are doing some long-term damage. I know that during my month on the forum, people mentioned all but the liver damage. Of course, liver damage would take time and, likely, by the time they found out about it, this diet would be a long-gone memory. Doubtful they'd ever connect the dots.
Often people would ask, after buying and receiving the Nite Lite, why there was a warning label for Diabetics and sugar in it. People would assure them the product was safe and that they had no problem taking it. Many people were even giving this to their children!
Editing to add: I've noticed a lot of visits to this page. I'd like to pass on a bit more information about the potential dangers of Niacin:

Please, only take this product while under your doctor's care and if you have it approved by him (or her). Every warning I've seen says not to take any niacin supplements without consulting a doctor first.
While I am at it, let me post yet another warning about niacin:
www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2
013/03/09/niacin-heart-risk/1974385/
taken from the article:
"But patients given niacin had a higher risk of bleeding, infections, new-onset diabetes or diabetic complications, according to a study presented today at a meeting of the American College of Cardiology in San Francisco."
While researching this today, you know what else I found and, oh, what irony. People take the Nite Lite because they are taking the hCG Drops and all the distributors are posting glowing reviews of this product. Well, turns out researchers have found that in people taking excess Niacn, those people more than doubled their risk of being obese in ten years!

Want to invest in a fat future, this may be the product for you!
One poster theorized there might be a sleep drug in the product and the FDA confirmed that really there is not much accountability there. You just don't know what you're getting. I think the lesson to take away though is that your health is too important and, maybe, this is one that you should stay away from.
